Teachers from across NSW, ACT and VIC will get the chance to enjoy some celebrity treatment as I take Celebrity Teacher on the road throughout June and July. The Celebrity Teacher program is designed to equip teachers with the skills they need to build personal resilience and positive self-care. I aim to reconnect teachers with their sense of vocational calling and the belief in their ability to succeed in the role.
Almost every teacher joins the profession because they care deeply about education and about the young people they are shaping, But alarmingly, forty percent of teachers are leaving the profession within their first five years in the classroom.
I have been a Music teacher of 16 years and have now retrained in psychology and coaching. Throughout my teaching career I saw that there are many contributing factors to the high drop-out rate, but a huge cause is the low focus on teacher wellbeing in schools. Having quit teaching myself in my second year in the profession, I reconnected with my purpose and passion for teaching and returned to the classroom – where I stayed for another fifteen years. So, I understand what stress and burnout feels like for a teacher and, with my tongue firmly in cheek, I am proud to describe myself as a survival expert for beginning teachers.
If we want great learning outcomes for our kids, we need school environments that foster resilience and teachers who prioritise their own wellbeing, Sadly this is often not the case and teacher wellbeing is being neglected. With many teachers approaching retirement, we can’t afford to be losing so many of our best new teachers,
Carl was a participant at one of my recent workshops. Carl is a High School Art Teacher, who has been teaching for seven years. When I asked him how he found the workshop he said:
“The Celebrity Teacher workshop really had an impact on me, Teaching can be a bit of a thankless job. Between looking after your students and negotiating school politics, it’s easy to forget about taking care of yourself. I often find it really hard to switch off when I get home.”
It didn't take long for me to know that Celebrity Teacher is about more than just surviving in the job. At Celebrity Teacher I help teachers flourish as effective, quality professionals – bringing their best self to the classroom and the staffroom.
I care about teachers and I want to see teachers in schools who have the mental and emotional space to build such positive relationships that their students are excited when they walk into the classroom. We love celebrity chefs not just because of what they cook, but because we want to cook like them. Likewise, a ‘celebrity teacher’ is the teacher that students want to learn from and be like.
If you know a hard working teacher who would benefit from some celebrity treatment, time out to reflect on their work and a chance to network with other teachers, tell them about Celebrity Teacher. Workshops are open to teachers at all points of their careers, including pre-service teachers. Teachers who register for a workshop, or buy a coaching package, before 13 July 2014 go in the draw to win a $1,000 Flight Centre voucher* (see the full terms and conditions).
